In my experience, some of the biggest challenges in meeting integration requirements stem from vendor-related issues. We often have to coordinate around their schedules—not only to perform testing ourselves but also to involve them in testing with our clients as part of the interface integration process.

Before using the eTransX HEMI product, it could take us months to have a working interface, whether we tried to develop it internally or used an outside programming company. Now, with HEMI, we can build and deploy an interface in just a matter of days.

At first, I was skeptical of the “no programming” approach to interface configuration. It seemed like a much more complex process, and I assumed it would still require a strong knowledge of HL7 structure and coding. However, once I saw how eTransX structured their files—especially compared to how we normally built HL7 files programmatically—it became clear that their drag-and-drop interface made it incredibly easy to create and test interfaces.

Traditionally, the skill set required to write interfaces demanded:

  • Strong knowledge of HL7 structure
  • Understanding of the coding language for your lab system
  • A working knowledge of the vendor’s EMR system structure

When working with third-party developers to build interfaces, we were also restricted by their project queues and limited resources. They often had multiple clients, and we would have to wait our turn or negotiate for additional resources to move our projects forward. Depending on the complexity, it could take anywhere from several weeks to multiple months to complete an interface.

My overall experience with eTransX—and my team’s as well—has been exemplary. Their technical resources are true experts, and they are available whenever we need them. Their customer service is top-notch, and my staff genuinely enjoys working with them.

There has been a great sense of collaboration and partnership between our organization and eTransX, and that has made all the difference in accelerating our integration capabilities.
